Starting your first driving lesson can feel a little daunting, especially if you have never sat in the driver’s seat before. At Malcolm School of Motoring, there is no pressure to know everything before you begin. Your first lesson is about getting comfortable with the car, understanding the basic controls and learning how to prepare yourself safely before moving off. Before You Start – The Cockpit Drill One of the first routines you will learn is the D-SSSM

Doors

D – Doors Make sure all doors are properly closed. Check that your own door is secure and look for any warning lights showing that another door may still be open. .

Seat

S – Seat Adjust your seat so you can comfortably reach all the pedals. When the clutch pedal is pressed fully down, your leg should still have a slight bend rather than being completely straight. Make sure you can also reach and turn the steering wheel comfortably without stretching.You can add any feature you want or edit the ones that are already listed.

Steering

S – Steering Adjust the steering wheel, where possible, so that you can hold it comfortably and clearly see the instrument panel. Your arms should have a slight bend when holding the steering wheel.You can edit all of this text and replace it with what you want to write.

Seatbelt

S – Seat Belt Fasten your seat belt securely before moving off. Make sure it is not twisted and that it sits comfortably across your shoulder and lap.

Mirrors

M – Mirrors Adjust your mirrors before you start driving. Check and adjust: The interior mirror The left door mirror The right door mirror Correctly adjusted mirrors help you stay aware of vehicles, cyclists and other road users around you.
